不过最让《加州旅馆》充满神秘色彩的还是这首歌的歌词，乐评人和歌迷对这首歌的原意有着各种各样的猜测，其中最为著名的假说有如下几种：
1，真实经历说。这个猜想认为加州旅馆是真实存在的一个酒店，坐落在接近加利福尼亚半岛接近圣巴巴拉的地方。老鹰乐队对该酒店的服务非常不满，所以专门写歌抱怨。
大概类似这样子的抱怨……
2，精神病院说。这个假说认为《加州旅馆》是映射了加州州立精神病院的情况（这个医院位于文图拉郡）。
3，恶魔崇拜说。有些人认为这首歌暗指声名狼藉的现代撒旦教信仰者为安东拉维，1966年时他设立了撒旦教堂，并致力于把人们转向撒旦崇拜。其中最直接的证据则是歌词中的一句“你可以随时结账，但你永远别想离开。”
4，毒瘾假说。有些人认为老鹰乐队在吸食了毒品以后，产生了“加州旅馆”的幻觉并最终把它写到了歌词里（有人考证歌词中“Colitas”一词暗指大麻叶）。尽管有着各种各样的民间传说，老鹰乐队还是确认了“加州旅馆”实际上和撒旦崇拜、精神病院又或者可卡因成瘾没有关系。
他们的这首大热单曲实际上想拷问1970年代生活在南加州喧闹中的人们，这一切是否只是一个陷阱。
当老鹰乐队的Don Felder、Glenn Frey和Don Henley写作《加州旅馆》的歌词时，不仅是加州，当时整个美国都陷入了一种无节制的物质主义中。在2007年《伦敦日报》对Don Henley的采访中，Don Henley表示人们对《加州旅馆》的歌词一直有着过分的遐想，而乐队成员最开始想要表达的，仅仅是“艺术和商业之间微妙的平衡”。
在那张为老鹰乐队赢得了1977年格莱美年度制作奖的专辑中，《加州旅馆》讽刺了当时人们对加州生活的一种不切合实际的宣传：似乎加州所有的一切就是好莱坞的星光大道上闪闪发光的影视明星、沙滩上衣着性感的女孩、还有隔着几百公里就能看到的闪烁霓虹。

《加州旅馆》的目标就是那个年代里围绕着好莱坞的这些物质贪婪和享乐主义：包括无节制的滥用毒品、挥金如土和开放的女性（对于最后一点老鹰乐队自己也承认他们乐在其中）。
而专辑封面的摄影师也表示，他通过专辑封面想要表达的主题，也是当时那种纯真的丧失和堕落的污染。
尽管《加州旅馆》的歌词表面上表达的是一个超现实主义的故事：疲惫的旅人们进驻了洛杉矶中央的一座奢华的旅馆，而吸引着他入驻的是旅馆引人注目且诱人的外观。但很快，他们就发现这是一个噩梦般的地方。但在这个故事中，“加州旅馆”其实象征着承载美国梦的音乐产业，也许真实世界中并没有这样一座旅馆（当然实际上是有的），它吸引着天真的音乐人慢慢陷入这个声名与财富的陷阱之中，最终无路可逃。
具有讽刺意味的是，让老鹰乐队获得巨大声誉和财富的《加州旅馆》专辑，恰恰也成了老鹰的伤仲永之作，之后他们花了三年才录完了下一张专辑，随后就因为内部矛盾而匆匆解散。
