这首歌曲是Mariah Carey（以下简称MC）的经典名曲，于1993年推出，立即夺得Billboard单曲排行榜冠军，正是这首歌曲，使MC享誉全球，这首歌曲非常经典，是MC历次演唱会必唱曲目，这首歌曲也被很多歌手翻唱过~~但是不是为奥运会而作，是mariah carey与afanasieff共同谱写的《hero》。这首歌曲给人的感觉，好像应该是某一部电影的主题曲。虽然它从未出现在任何电影里面，不过事实上它的诞生倒是的确跟电影有关。1992年哥伦比亚电影公司拍摄了一部由dustin hoffman与女星geena davis共同主演的电影《hero》，原声带专辑由sony下面的epic唱片取得制作与发行的权利。公司很想让mariah carey来演唱主题曲，但是以她当时的声望与忙碌的程度，他们几乎根本无法靠近她，于是epic退而求其次，希望与mariah carey合作关系密切的afanasieff能够帮着写点东西。他们把影片放给afanasieff看，告诉他说，他们可能会邀请gloria estefan来演唱主题曲。
当时，afanasieff跟mariah正在紧锣密鼓的进行《music box》专辑的录制。这天，在休息的时候，afanasieff对mariah提起这部电影，mariah听了电影的情节立刻灵感泉涌，和afanasieff一起动手，不到两个小时就写出了《hero》这首歌。由于当时他们心中认为歌曲是要由gloria estefan来演唱的，因此在风格上就完全没有考虑mariah本人的偏好，呈现出一种比较通俗、比较“老式”的味道。就在他们即将完成时，刚好经过的mottola听到了，马上问他们那是什么歌曲。当他们回答是为电影《hero》所谱写的主题歌，mottola立即表示反对，因为这首歌曲太精彩了，把它拿给电影公司未免可惜，坚持mariah一定要自己演唱。1993年圣诞节，在《dreamlover》退下冠军宝座不到两个月之后，mariah carey以《hero》这首歌曲夺回榜首的荣耀，蝉联了四个星期。而就在同一天《music box》也登上了专辑排行榜的冠军宝座。。。
