BEIJING, Feb. 26 (China Daily) -- As the smog orange warning continues, tourist attractions in Beijing are experiencing a quick fall in visitor number.

A new report on the morning of February 24 shows that the concentration of PM 2.5 has risen, with no sign of decreasing, the orange warning will still be in effect, according to Xinhua News Agency.

According to data by the Beijing Tourism Website, by 2:00 pm, February 24, popular tourist attractions including The Great Wall and Palace Museum had been affected by the smog in terms of tourist numbers.

As for the Palace Museum, the number of visitors was only 11,200 that day, far from the figure of 40,000, which is the daily average number of visitors it normally receives.

There were a few visitors in Beihai Park on the morning of February 24, and two visitors from Hebei province planned to end their morning tour earlier than planned because of the smog. One of them said, “The visibility is so poor that we can’t take good photos, or even see clearly. We’d better leave early.” As for worsening air conditions, travel agencies have also taken some measures to avoid a further fall in tourist numbers. An employee with China Youth Travel Service, Wang Tao, said the agency will inform tourists of the weather conditions at their destinations(目的地). A tour guide with China Travel Service also told the media that it was a tour guide’s duty to inform foreign visitors of the smog conditions in Beijing, and the agency would provide free face masks to those in need. But work to do so only treats the symptom(症状) rather than the disease itself, because the root cause is air pollution. China will introduce various emergency responses and long-term measures against air pollution. Officials and experts called for combined work by government, industries and the public to cooperate more efficiently and to together solve the problem.

51. In the following statements, which one is TRUE?

A. The tourism in Beijing was hardly affected by the smoggy weather.

A. About 11,200. B. About 78,400. C. About 40,000. D. About 280,000.

The most effective way to solve the problem of air pollution is to ______.

A lifelong nature lover, Oscar Aranda studies biology in college and he wanted to work with animals at sea. But he didn’t find his way until years later when he was asked to go to a beach and saw a scene. “ I found a turtle cut up into pieces in a bucket, and its heart was still beating,” Aranda said.

There was nothing that Aranda could do to save the turtle. But ever since then, he has patrolled(巡逻) Puerto Vallarta’s beaches as an unofficial keeper of the sea turtle. Aranda’s conservation group, Vallarta Rescue, aiming to protect turtles, is located along Mexico’s northwest Pacific beaches. From June to December, Aranda and his volunteers watch over the shoreline where turtles lay their eggs.

Aranda’s group is non-profit and it relies entirely on private donations. To earn a living, Aranda works during the day as an ecotourism(生态旅游) boat driver. At sunset, he heads out to what he calls the perfect job in the perfect place.

Twenty years ago, the Mexican government forbade commercial fishing of sea turtles. But Mexico still has one of the highest rates of turtle poaching(偷猎) in the world. Aranda believes the poaching business is not sustained(维持) by profit, because a single turtle egg sells for about 50 cents. “I think it’s how people feel eating something forbidden,” he said. “They want to try what is illegal. They have seen their parents and their grandparents eat them, and it’s a way of thinking that is very hard to change.”

Changing the locals’ ideas is part of what drivers Aranda to stay awake during his night patrols in Puerto Vallarta. A good night, he says, is any night when a single turtle is spotted and protected from poachers.

41. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. How Oscar Aranda Found His Career B. How Vallarta Rescue Saves Sea Turtles

A. the locals want to make a big profit from it

B. Mexico has the largest number of sea turtles along the shoreline

C. the locals want to try something that is not allowed

D. the locals feel like eating things like sea turtles

43. In Aranda’s opinion, the best way to prevent turtle poaching is to ___________.

A. employ more keepers to patrol every day

B. reduce the profit of the poaching business

C. make a great change in the locals’ ideas

D. make strict laws to regulate the locals’ behavior

Make some noise on May 7 for Music Monday. People in the U.S. and Canada will be celebrating the day by singing and playing musical instruments together.

Music Monday is the first day of National Wanna Play Music Week, which runs from May 7 to

13. The National Association of Music Merchants(NAMM) organizes the weeklong celebration every year. This marks the seventh year the organizations is teaming up with Canada’s Coalition for Music Eduscation(CME), the group that started Music Monday.

“It’s a day to fill the skies with music and bring young people together in song,” CME Executive Director Holly Nimmons said.

The CME started Music Monday in 2005. It is held every year on the first Monday of May. It was created to help people realize the importance of music education programs in schools and in communities. The day also celebrates the benefits of playing music for people of all ages.

NAMM researches the effects of music on children. They found that playing music has positive effects on thinking skills and on confidence. It also helps kids get along well with their peers(同龄人). “Learning musical skills can also help in your studies of other subjects, such as math, reading and language,” Lora Bodmer, who works at NAMM, said.

Their studies show that music can also help people form friendships and connect with different groups. Nimmons says anyone can join in on the day, not just those who are musically gifted. “I think that we all have the music in us, and it’s a matter of confidence,” she said. “Sing with other people or beat drums, just enjoy the music.”

Participants can turn on the radio to join in the fun. Each year a song is chosen for Music Monday. This year the song is “Tomorrow Is Coming” by Luke Doucet. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation(CBC) will be playing the song at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. People across North America will play or sing the song at the exact same time. The performance is meant to connect people through melody(旋律). More than 700,000 students took part in the concert last year.
