Abstract
Charlie Kaufman is known as a wizard scriptwriter in Hollywood because of his unique creativity and fantastic imagination. His works are known for their clever design and scientific colors. Among those films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the most famous one. Once released in 2004, the film caused a big stir and won the best original screenplay award of the 77th annual Academy Awards.
The film mainly describes a moving story about Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski. In the story, Joel finds that the girl he has been dating for years erases all the memory about him with the help of an advanced equipment. Angry and sad, he decides to erase all the memory about her as well. Whereas when the memory about Clementine are erased bit by bit, Joel starts to realize the kindness of her and the good time they have. At this moment, Joel wants to stop the procedure and tries his best to keep the memory left. The whole film reveals every respect of love, marriage and family in modern daily work and life. It is also philosophical and arouses deep contemplation of people.
Nevertheless, there are a very few formal studies about the film, especially at home. What‟s worse, the studies are carried out within quite narrow perspectives. Faced with this situation, the paper is mainly aimed to explore and analyze the characters, images and theme of the film from in-depth perspective, as well as reveal the philosophical significance about love, marriage and life so that the audience can seize the connotation of the film in more comprehensive view. Moreover, the paper tries to propose some new ideas based on the previous research and finally provides a reasonable guidance about views of love and marriage for people, especially the youth.
Key words: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; characters; images; theme; love
and marriage
