NOW that newsrooms are becoming less popular in the US, young people have begun to tell their own stories.

GlobalGirl Media, a nonprofit organization that teaches teenage girls digital storytelling skills, was started by award-winning filmmakers Amie Williams and Meena Nanji in Los Angeles in 2010.

“By giving girls a voice, you introduce a different story, and change the existing one,” said Danny Glover, a member of the GlobalGirl Media advisory board.

The program, now being run from California, is truly global, with groups in South Africa, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The girls use documentaries to deal with subjects that matter to them, including teenage depression, self-harm and protests in their communities. They can also choose to write and blog.

“When the camera’s in my hands, I feel like I can’t lose,” said Cheyenne Grisez, 14. “It makes me happy and I feel like I can do anything.”

Grisez was one of eight young women who took part in the summer’s academy in California.

On the final day of the summer academy, Williams worked with Grisez and Camila Prado, 15, on a short film about Prado’s fight against an eating disorder. In the film, Prado bravely interviewed her parents and sister about how she was able to beat her depression and eating disorder. They also went out on the streets and asked women to give their bodies a score. This film and others the girls had made were shown to parents and friends on the last day of the academy, celebrating their hard work.

“It’s their story, and nobody knows how to tell it better than they do,” Williams said.

“These girls are from really difficult backgrounds. They feel trapped sometimes. They feel alone,” Williams said. “The camera gives them a way to look at their world in a different way and get out of that feeling.”

Girls in the program practice their skills and build confidence by going out in the community and interviewing people for the short films. Many of them had no experience, but found they had good storytelling skills.

“You give these girls the opportunity to not only tell their stories, they’re going to tell the stories of the community and stories that matter to their lives,” said GlobalGirl Media summer academy project director Heather Faison.

“I work with these girls. Every day I leave inspired and completely grateful, because I know that, due to the work we’re doing with them, things will be better,” Faison said.

STUDENTS being interviewed either by alumni representatives (毕业生代表) or an admissions office need to walk a very fine line between being prepared and being rehearsed.

Here are some basic interview suggestions for you:

Don’t arrive late. Don’t arrive too early either. You won’t have anything to do except getting more nervous.

Don’t dress inappropriately. There’s no need for a jacket and tie, but you have to pretend you’re going out for a nice dinner. That means no sneakers, shorts, T-shirts or jeans. Choose your outfit (服装) two days before the interview.

Don’t forget to come prepared with your own questions. These questions are often where a student has the best opportunity to set themselves apart from other applicants. Your questions should demonstrate (证明) critical thinking. Create a list of questions you can ask that will help you decide if this could be the right college for you.

WE arrived at the airport just in time for my flight. “Well, here we are,” my sister said with a sigh. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. We had both been

dreading this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final goodbye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad.

By the time I reached the customs office I was sobbing (抽泣).

We were frightened of the attic but also fascinated by its smells and sounds. Whenever one of us needed something, the other one would come along.

The plane shook heavily and the bag that I had shoved (推) onto the seat next to me fell on the floor. My aspirin, hairbrush and a copy of the book I planned to read were spread on the floor. I bent over to gather them up when I saw an unfamiliar little book in the middle of my belongings. It was not until I picked it up that I realized that it was a diary.

Immediately I recognized my sister’s handwriting. “Hi Sis, what a day it has been today. First you let me know that you are moving abroad and then my boss...” Only then did I realize that my sister had been keeping a diary for the past month and that she was now passing it on to me. I was to write in it for the next couple of months and then send it back to her.

I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s comings and goings. And even though a large ocean separated us, it felt like she was actually there. It was only when I thought that I had lost my best friend that I realized that she was going to be with me forever.
