Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was ready to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult, I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boy friends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.

On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions, gone with my father’s critical(挑剔的)air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, and who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?

The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with My dad in his new home in Arizona.

23. Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult?

A. He was silent most of the time B. He was too proud of himself

C. He did not love his children D. He expected too much of her

24. When the author went out with her father on weekends, she would feel________.

A. nervous B. sorry C. tired D. safe

25. What does the author think of her father after her visit to Tucson?

A. More critical B. More talkative

C. Gentle and friendly D. Strict and hard-working

B

The need to feed a growing population is paying much attention to the world's supply(提供) of water. With 97% of the world's water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs careful management, especially in agriculture. The idea of a water shortage seems strange to someone lucky enough to live in a high rainfall country, but many of the world's agricultural industries are short of water.

Although dams(大坝) can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution(重新分配)are very high. Not only the cost of the engineering itself but an environmental cost has to be considered. Where valleys are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed. Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world to the other. Each country must therefore depend on the management of its own water to supply its farming requirements.

This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation (灌溉). In Texas, farmers' overuse of irrigation water has caused a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys, but much of the water use has been poorly managed.

Saudi Arabia's attempts(尝试) to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping(抽水) of a large number of irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry.

26. From the first two paragraphs we learn that________.

A. much of the world's water can be used by people

B. people in high rainfall countries feel lucky

C. the costs of water redistribution should be considered.

D. water can be easily carried through pipes across the world

27. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The water stores in Texas have been reduced by 75%.

B. Most industries in the world suffer from water shortages.

C. The underground water in Saudi Arabia might run out in 50 years.

D. Good management of water use came from the project in the Central Valley.

28. The text is mainly about________.

A. water supply and increasing population

B. water use management and agriculture

C. water redistribution and wildlife protection

D. water shortages and environmental protection

If you were given the chance to spend a year in space, would you take it right away?

You probably would —who could say no to such an exciting ,fun adventure?(冒险). However, if you knew the possible health hazards(危险) and the experiments that might be carried out on you, would you have second thoughts?

Astronauts Scott Kelly of the US and Mikhail Kornienko of Russia boarded the International Space Station on March 27 and won’t return until March 2016. They are going to spend a year in space as part of a NASA experiment research why some astronauts adjust (调整)better to space than others, as well as space’s long-term effects on the human body.

“We know a lot about the first six months but we know almost nothing about what happens between 6 and 12 months in space,” said Julie Robinson, NASA chief scientist for the orbiting( ) laboratory.

We already know some facts about the lack of gravity in space. Bodily fluids(液体) move towards your head and you also get an “enormous headache” and nausea( 恶心),according to US astronaut Marsha Ivins in wired magazines.

Normal activities are also different especially eating on board, according to Ivins. Things taste different in space, which meant that her chocolate tasted “like wax(蜡)”, There’s also no way to cook in space , so space food is already cooked and then freeze-dried and vacuum-packed(真空包装). Water must be added and it must be warmed up in the oven.

Even the simple experience of sleeping is different. The bag must be fixed on the wall or the ceiling or the floor, and you get in. It’s like camping. However, you must be careful: “ If you don’t put your arms into the bag, they move out in front of you.”

NASA’s experiment will look further than these differences, though. For example, it will go on with the most difficult International Space Station experiment in history to study weightlessness.

Kelly and kornienko will stay in a device(装置) that will suck(吸) their legs heavily, acting like gravity on Earth. Scientists on board will then use ultrasound (超声波) and other instruments to study what effect this has on the astronauts’ blood vessels( 血管).

So, what do you think? Would you be ready for a year’s holiday in space?

29. Which choices describe how astronauts live in space, according to the article?

d. Before sleep, they have to fix their sleeping bags somewhere to stop them floating.

B. better understand what effect ultrasound(超声波) on the astronauts’ blood vessels. ( 血管).

C. know more about how to overcome weightlessness in space.

D. study how the human body reacts and gets used to being in space for la long time.

31. What is the article mainly about ?

A. A new achievement in space research.

B. Two astronauts starting their year of space exploration.

C. How staying in space for a year affects the human body.

D. Astronauts’ unbelievable difficulties adjusting to living and working in space.

Zigfried, a little mouse, blew his breath on the frosty window of the farmhouse and rubbed it to see the outside. Still nobody came. Maybe today, he thought hopefully. It was only a few days before Christmas and he was watching for a miracle (奇迹).

This farmhouse had been empty too long. It needed a family. Zigfried’s stomach made a noise. He realized that he hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday. He jumped from the windowsill (窗沿), grabbed a bag from his home, and went next door to Farmer Mike’s.

Farmer Mike’s house had been a great place for the little mouse until the farmer married a wife who had a cat. Zigfried trembled when he thought of it. He looked around cautiously as he stole into the room where grain was stored and was quite nervous as he filled his bag with wheat. He was turning to leave when suddenly he felt a hot breath about his ear. His heart beat 40 , and without thinking he started to run and luckily escaped the cat’s paws (爪子).

The next afternoon Zigfried heard some good news: a new family would be moving into the farmhouse soon. Zigfried’s granny would arrive on Christmas Eve to celebrate with him. He hoped that the family would come before his granny came. Before long, a car came up the road leading to the house, with butter sandwiches, cheese and chocolate.

Zigfried’s Christmas miracle did arrive!

The house came alive the next few days. Zigfried enjoyed every single hour of them. However, the day before Christmas when he was drinking hot chocolate with a satisfied smile at the door of his home, he heard the discussion of the children of the family about what they might get for Christmas. What? A cat? The smile froze on his face; his mouth fell wide open. After a long while, he at last found his voice: “Hey! Whose Christmas miracle is this?”
