Are You Right Handed or Left Handed?

Which hand do you use when write? About 8 to 15 percent of people are left handed. They often have to use tools that are designed for right-handed people. So it is difficult for left-handers to use most tools. If you are right handed, try this experiment: Take a knife with your left hand and try cutting a potato into pieces. Don’t be surprised if you feel awkward(别扭的).

In the past, people thought it was strange to use the left hand. Young students looked down upon their left-handed classmates. Some children were even punished for using their left hand to write. But these days parents and teachers have accepted that. In almost every school in the world, left-handed students can use their left hand to write.

What causes people to be left handed or right handed? Experts have searched long and hard on this. They conclude(得出结论)that left-handed people are left handed for the same reason that right-handed people are right handed. One out of every ten people just is a left-handed people are right handed. One out of every ten people just is a left-hander. It’s simply like the color of our eyes – some people have brown eyes, while some others have black eyes.

However, may researchers think that left-handers and right-handers are different in some aspects. Right-handers are more talkative and outgoing than left-handers. Many right-handed people understand spoken words better. For example, after they listen to directions to a supermarket, they can find it easily. Right-handers are good at organizing people, too. They are also better basketball guards. Just ask Yao Ming.

Research shows that left-handers are creative and artistic. Many famous performers, like Jim Carrey and Paul McCartney, are left handed. Many left-handers learn better visually(在视觉方面). In art, both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were left handed. In music, Ludwig van Beethoven was left handed. In science, you find Newton and Einstein. The left-handed people are also really good at tennis and other single sports.

If you prefer one hand, but you are still good at writing with the other, you are mixed. Research shows mixed-handers can remember everyday things better than other people. What did you eat for lunch two weeks ago? If you’re mixed handed, you can probably remember. 49. If right-handers cut up potatoes with there left hand, they will .

A. get hurt

B. give up cutting D. change their tools

C. feel awkward

50. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. Causes of being left handed. B. Encouragement to left-handers C. Punishment for using the left hand. D. Changes in opinions on left-handers. A. learn better visually B. are good organizers C. are better at single sports D. give clear directions to others A. may be more talkative and outgoing

1. A 形容词。 3. A 副词。

先行词为 a young man, 在定语从句中做主语,故选关系代词who。

“...get his potatoes ready in time.” 8. C 句型。It is time for sb to do sth “对某人来说是时候做...”故选C。

10. A 动名词。 12.A 副词。 Life is like this too.

“Save the whales!” That’s what the picture on Jake Smith’s bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important: that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighbourhood.

It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whales’ coming. A group of the animals were swimming close to the beach in Jake’s hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing they’d have to do anything about.

Then one whale swam in the direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, and when the waves receded. Its huge body on the sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers.

They had to become rescuers. A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.

An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the animal. Jack and his family couldn’t do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could help in some way.

Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed out to sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water—a thank-you to those who had worked so hard to save his life.

26. What does the picture on Jake’s wall tell us about him?

A. He lived near the ocean. B. He cared about the environment. C. He worked as an animal rescuer.

D. He thought whales were the most beautiful animals.

27. Why did the local people go down to the beach that morning?

28. The underlined word “receded” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

A. didn't move

B. went back out

C. washed over

D. got up

29. How did Jake and his family help save the whale?

It may be hard to believe, but the American Revolution(革命)—the war that freed the American states from British control—began over a cup of tea. Tea was not the only thing that caused the war, of course, but it played a very big part.

The British people’s love of tea is well-known. When the British won control over mush of North America in the early 1700s, they brought their tea- drinking habits with them. Tea quickly became the continents most popular drink. As tea could not be grown locally, just as in Britain, it was shipped into the country—mostly from India.

C

During my first two weeks at the University of California , Berkeley , I experienced some unexpected , funny , and sometimes embarrassing(令人尴尬的) situations . Allow me to share some with you .

But first , let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States .

Check the weather before coming ! I was very sure that California was sunny all year around so I left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris . It was a huge mistake ! It rained almost every day during the first week in Berkeley .

I have to say that I quickly forgot these unlucky events . Life in Berkeley is very pleasant and everything is so easy compared to Paris . For example , in only 24 hours I bought a mobile phone and made the lease(租约) agreement for a flat . What’s more , almost all the shops are open on Sunday , which is very practical for me .

The first thing that surprised me is that students may come late to class . They freely enter and leave the classroom many times during class , In France , students respect the teacher’s lesson , so they are never late and they leave the classroom only at the end of the class .

The local people in California are in general very nice , open and active , However , I am not totally used to their habits yet . Indeed , I was used to shaking my friends’ hands every day in France . During my second day at Berkeley , I shook the hand of one of my classmates whom I had met the day before and he told me ―I think we already met !‖

Another funny story happened during the first party I attended : A girl that I meet before came to hug me . I thought she wanted to kiss me like we usually do in France to say hello . So I kissed her and she seemed a little bit embarrassed .

I live a great experience at present , and I would just encourage any student to become a member in a program at UC , Berkeley .

31. According to the writer’s advice , before students study in America , they should .

A. make a lease agreement for a flat

B. leave their warm clothes at home

C. pay attention to the local weather

D. prepare a phone as early as possible

32. When the writer’s classmate said ―I think we already met !‖ , he meant .

A. he and the write had known each other in France

B. Americans needn’t shake hands when they met again

C. he was not used to shaking hands with others

D. the write had forgotten about their last meeting

33. What does the writer mainly want to tell us ?

A. His experience at UC , Berkeley . B. The relationship between classmates .

C. His advice on studying abroad . D. The difference in attending a class .

D

Let me tell you about a young boy who made a model car all on his own. The boy is me, six years ago when I was just 11. The car was small and simple, but in my imagination it was a high-speed racing car, speeding along the race road.

It was during the school summer holidays and workmen were building a new driveway and garage(车库) beside our house. It meant to add something new to our home. When I watched the workman, I came up with an idea---I would build a car to drive into the garage in celebration of it. I told my mother and began with my plans. But I couldn't find the right things for making the car, so I gave up and sadly spent several days doing nothing. My mother noticed that I had stopped working and asked me why. I explained and she suggested

that maybe I should change my plan to fit the things I had, rather than give up.

And that's just what I did. I found small pieces of wood in my father's workshop and made my car from anything that was lying around the house. When I found a small engine(发动机) from one of my old model planes, I added that. The power came from a battery(电池) I found in a box.

By the time the garage was finished, so was my car. I called my family together outside the house, started the engine and put the car on the driveway. It was fast, and I had to run to the garage to prevent it from hitting the new door. My family began to cheer and I smiled proudly. Thanks to my mother I learned the value of continuing to do things, especially something difficult. Soon I was making plans for my next project: a robot!

31.During my first two weeks at the University of California,Berkeley,I experienced some unexpected, funny, and sometimes embarrassing(令人尴尬的) situations.Allow me to share some with you.

But first, let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States.Check the weather before coming!I was very sure that California was sunny all year around so I left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris. It was a huge mistake! It rained almost every day during the first week in Berkeley.

I have to say that I quickly forgot these unlucky events.Life in Berkeley is very pleasant and everything is so easy compared to Paris. For example,

in only 24hours I bought a mobile phone

and made the lease(租约) agreement for a flat. What’s more, almost all the shops are open on Sunday, which is very practical for me.

The first thing that surprised me is that students may come late to class. They freely enter and leave the classroom many times during class,In France, students respect the teacher’s lesson,so they are never late and they leave the classroom only at the end of the class. The local people in California are in general very nice, open and active,However,I am not totally used to their habits yet.Indeed,I was used to shaking my friends’hands every day in France.During my second day at Berkeley,I shook the hand of one of my classmates whom I had met the day before and he told me“I think we already met!”

Another funny story happened during the first party I attended:A girl that I meet before came to hug me.I thought she wanted to kiss me like we usually do in France to say hello. So I kissed her and she seemed a little bit embarrassed.

I live a great experience at present, and I would just encourage any student to become a member in a program at UC,Berkeley.

34.Your body is special﹣no two people in the world are alike,Although you are different from everyone else, you have exactly the same body parts as the people around you, doing different jobs that keep all of us alive.

What is inside my head? ﹣your brain. As you are reading, your eyes send pictures to your brain which makes meaning from what you see.Your brain helps you to remember and think, and makes sure your body is doing what it should.

What is my skin(皮肤) for?

Your skin covers your body.In most parts of your body, the skin is just as thick as half a centimeter. If you have your skin cut,it will have a quick cure and stop viruses from getting into your body.Your skin also helps you feel the heat and coldness of the environment around you.Hair grows from inside the skin. When you feel hot, extra heat comes out through your skin.As a result, your body temperature drops.
